Washer capacity guide: what actually fits in 4.2, 4.5 and 5.0 cubic feet
Manufacturers quote drum volume. What you care about is how many towels fit, and those two numbers are related by a factor nobody publishes.
The short version
A 4.5 cu ft drum holds roughly 12–14 bath towels, a queen sheet set, or one standard king comforter. Subtract about 10% of usable space if the machine has a centre agitator. Below 4.0 cu ft a king comforter is unrealistic; above 5.0 cu ft you are buying capacity a four-person household will rarely fill.

Every washer capacity guide starts with cubic feet, and cubic feet measures drum volume. It does not measure what you can actually wash, and the relationship between the two depends on the wash system, the item type and how honest you are about overloading.

Those figures assume a properly loaded drum: dry contents reaching no more than three-quarters of drum height, with room for the load to turn over once it is wet and heavy.
Why an agitator holds less than the number says
A 4.5 cubic foot agitator machine and a 4.5 cubic foot impeller machine do not hold the same amount.
The agitator column occupies the centre of the drum from floor to near the top. That is perhaps 8 to 10% of the stated volume in raw terms — but the practical reduction is larger than that for bulky items, because a comforter cannot occupy the space the column is in, cannot wrap around it without binding, and cannot tumble past it.
For flat laundry — towels, shirts, sheets — the difference is close to the raw 10%. For a single bulky item, an agitator machine behaves like a drum roughly a full size smaller. The overloading test
Poor cleaning results are far more often an overloading problem than a machine problem, and the diagnosis takes ten seconds.
Before starting: dry load should reach no higher than three-quarters of the drum, and you should be able to lay a flat hand between the top of the load and the rim. In an agitator machine, clothes should be distributed around the agitator, not piled over its top.
Thirty seconds into agitation: watch the load. It should visibly roll — items on top moving down, items at the bottom coming up. If it moves as a single mass, or if it barely moves at all, there is too much in there or not enough water.

Bigger is not automatically better
There is a persistent assumption that buying more capacity is a free upgrade if you can afford it. Three reasons it is not.
Sensed cycles use more water on larger drums. The sensing algorithm has more volume to work with and fills accordingly. Washing a half load in a 5.0 cu ft machine uses more water than washing the same load in a 4.2.
A larger drum invites overloading. This is behavioural rather than technical, and it is real. People fill the machine they have.

Buy for your largest regular load, not your largest conceivable one. If you wash a king comforter twice a year, a laundromat trip twice a year is cheaper than two extra cubic feet for a decade.
Matching the dryer
One detail that gets missed when replacing only the washer: dryer capacity should exceed washer capacity, generally by around 1.5 to 2 times.
Wet clothes from a 4.5 cu ft washer need room to tumble in the dryer, and a dryer packed to capacity dries unevenly and takes far longer. A 4.5 cu ft washer pairs sensibly with a 7.0 to 7.5 cu ft dryer. If your existing dryer is 6.0 cu ft, a 5.0 cu ft washer will regularly produce loads it cannot handle in one pass.
That mismatch costs more in dryer energy than the extra washer capacity ever saves in trips.

What size washer do I need for a family of 4?
4.2 to 4.5 cubic feet covers a four-person household comfortably at roughly five to seven loads a week. Going to 5.0 cu ft is worth it if you regularly wash king bedding or bulky items, and unnecessary otherwise — a larger drum does not make small loads more efficient, and on some machines it makes them less so.
Can a 4.5 cu ft washer fit a king comforter?
A standard-fill king comforter, yes, as a single item. An oversized or down-filled one, marginally — and less reliably in an agitator machine where the centre column takes up space. The test is whether the item can move freely once wet; if it sits packed against the drum wall, it will not clean.
How many towels fit in a 4.5 cu ft washer?
Twelve to fourteen standard bath towels. Towels are the most useful benchmark because they are dense and absorbent, so a load that looks reasonable dry becomes very heavy wet. If the drum is more than about three-quarters full of dry towels, it is overloaded.
Is a bigger washer always better?
No. A larger drum costs more, takes more floor space, and uses more water on a sensed cycle for the same load because the sensing has more volume to work with. It also encourages overloading, which is the single most common cause of poor cleaning results. Buy the capacity your largest regular load needs, not the largest available.
How do I know if I am overloading the washer?
