What GE's Deep Fill actually does, and when you should use it

Modern washers decide the water level for you. Deep Fill is the button that takes that decision back, and it is the single most useful feature on this range of machines.

Every modern top-loader senses the load and decides how much water to add. It is the reason these machines meet efficiency standards, and it is also the reason a lot of people think modern washers do not work.

Deep Fill is GE's override. Understanding when it earns its ten gallons is most of what you need to know about operating these machines well.

How load sensing actually works

When you start a cycle, the machine does not simply fill. It runs a short sequence:

  1. Adds a small quantity of water.
  2. Rotates the load briefly and measures the resistance — a heavier, wetter load resists more.
  3. Calculates how much more water the load needs to be adequately wetted.
  4. Adds that water in one or more further stages.

The whole sequence takes a few minutes, during which the drum looks worryingly dry. It is not a fault, and the machine is not stuck.

The problem is the objective. The sensor is estimating how much water this load absorbs, not how much dilution this soil needs. Those are different questions, and for a load of muddy work trousers the answer to the second one is considerably larger than the answer to the first.

What Deep Fill changes

Press it and the sensing is bypassed. The machine fills to a preset level — GE offers Deep Fill and Deep Fill Max on different models — and agitates in that volume.

Three things happen with more water. Clothes move more freely, so mechanical action distributes better through the load. Detergent is diluted further, which improves rinsing rather than washing. And soil that has been lifted off fabric has somewhere to go instead of redepositing.

That third point is the one people underestimate. In a low-water wash, dislodged dirt stays in suspension in a small volume of water surrounding the clothes. Some of it goes back onto the fabric. On a genuinely dirty load, this is why the result can look washed but feel wrong.

Which loads actually need it

Use Deep Fill for:

  • Heavily soiled work clothes. Mud, sawdust, grease, garden soil. The clearest case.
  • Pet bedding. Odour is a dilution problem more than a chemistry problem.
  • Sports kit. Sweat salts need volume to rinse out, and this is why gym clothes redevelop odour when they get warm.
  • Bulky single items. A comforter or sleeping bag needs to float and turn over, and a sensed cycle will underfill for a single large item every time.
  • Anyone with sensitive skin. More rinse water means less detergent residue in the fabric, and that is a genuine dermatological difference rather than a marketing one.
  • After washing something contaminated — paint clothes, anything chemical — as part of a clean-out cycle.

Do not use Deep Fill for:

  • Everyday shirts, trousers, office wear
  • Towels and bedding that are simply used rather than dirty
  • Small loads — you are filling a drum around three garments
  • Delicates, where more water plus an agitator means more mechanical wear

What it costs

About 10 extra gallons per load over a sensed normal cycle.

At 300 loads a year, using Deep Fill on everything is roughly 3,000 extra gallons. In most US municipalities combined water and sewer runs $5 to $12 per thousand gallons, so that is $15 to $36 a year — plus the energy to heat whatever proportion of it is hot, which on a warm wash is the larger cost of the two.

Using it selectively on perhaps a third of loads costs $5 to $12 a year. That is a rounding error against getting work clothes genuinely clean.

Why this feature is disappearing

Deep Fill is why the our GE GTW485ASWWB review machine is not ENERGY STAR certified, and that is not incidental — it is the mechanism.

ENERGY STAR sets an Integrated Water Factor threshold: gallons per cycle per cubic foot of capacity. A machine that permits a 27-gallon fill on a 4.5 cu ft drum cannot meet it, regardless of what it does on the sensed cycle. So manufacturers face a straightforward choice: keep the override and lose certification, or remove the override and qualify.

Most have removed it. GE has kept it on this line, and it is the single strongest argument for buying one of these machines over a certified competitor — provided you actually use the sensed cycle by default and reach for Deep Fill only when the load calls for it.

How much water does GE Deep Fill use?

Roughly 27 gallons on a maximum fill against about 14 to 17 gallons for a standard sensed cycle. The exact figure varies with load size because Deep Fill sets a level rather than a volume — a lighter load displaces less water and so uses slightly less.

Should I use Deep Fill every time?

No. On ordinary laundry it adds about 10 gallons and improves nothing, because the sensed level already covers the load adequately. Save it for heavily soiled items, bulky items that need room to move, and anything where dilution matters — pet bedding, gym kit, work clothes.

Why does my washer not fill all the way?

Because it is doing what it was designed to do. Load-sensing machines add water in stages, measuring the load's absorption between fills. To an eye used to older washers this looks like a fault; it is not. If you want the old behaviour, that is exactly what Deep Fill is for.

Does Deep Fill rinse better?

Yes, meaningfully, and this is its most underrated use. Detergent residue is diluted rather than removed, so more water means less residue left in fabric. If anyone in the household has sensitive skin, running an extra rinse or using Deep Fill on their laundry makes a noticeable difference.

Does Deep Fill make the wash longer?

Marginally — a few minutes of extra fill and drain time. It does not extend the agitation phase. If anything, cycles on an agitator machine with more water tend to feel quicker because the load moves more freely.

Can you use Deep Fill on every cycle?

It is available on most cycles but not all — delicate and hand-wash cycles typically lock it out, because the whole point of those cycles is reduced mechanical action and a full drum increases it. Check the panel; if the light will not come on, the cycle is excluded by design.
