Agitator vs impeller: which washing machine actually cleans better
The industry has moved almost entirely to impellers, and the reasons are only partly about cleaning performance.
The short answer
Agitator if your clothes get genuinely dirty; impeller if they mostly get worn. An agitator applies mechanical force and uses about 27 gallons on a full fill, which is what actually removes ground-in soil. An impeller uses 12–17 gallons, is gentler on fabric, holds bulkier items and qualifies for efficiency certifications. The gap for ordinary laundry is smaller than the marketing suggests; the gap for mud is not.

Walk into an appliance showroom and roughly four in five top-loaders on the floor will be impeller machines. That did not happen because impellers clean better. It happened because impellers use less water, and water use is what efficiency certifications measure.
That is not a conspiracy — using less water is genuinely good. But it does mean the marketing you encounter is arguing one side of a trade, and it is worth knowing what the other side is.
The mechanical difference
An agitator is the tall column in the middle of the drum. On a dual-action design like GE's, the lower barrel rotates the load while an upper auger pushes clothes down from the top, producing a continuous rolling action. Clothes rub against the agitator and against each other. That friction is the point.
An impeller is a low disc or set of vanes on the drum floor. It spins the water and the load together, creating a current that moves clothes over one another. There is no tall column, so the whole drum volume is usable.
The distinction that matters: agitators apply mechanical energy to the load, impellers apply hydraulic energy. Soil that is bonded to fibre — clay, grease, ground-in dirt — comes off through mechanical action. Soil that is loose or dissolved comes off through chemistry and circulation.

Two of those rows deserve a note. Cycle time surprises people — the efficient machine is the slow one, because it is substituting time for water. And tangling: an agitator's rolling action wraps long items around the column, which is why sheets and trouser legs come out knotted more often on agitator machines.
Choose an agitator if
Your laundry is genuinely dirty. Trades clothing, farm clothes, gardening kit, kids' sports uniforms. This is the case where the difference is not marginal — mechanical action removes mud and grease that a low-water cycle leaves behind, and no amount of detergent chemistry fully substitutes for it.
You want shorter cycles. Forty-five minutes against ninety, consistently. For a household doing eight or ten loads a week, that is hours.

You are replacing a machine you were happy with. If a twenty-year-old top-loader did the job, an agitator machine behaves the same way and an impeller machine will feel wrong for the first six months.
Choose an impeller if
Your laundry is mostly worn rather than dirty. Office clothing, bedding, towels. The performance gap on this kind of load is small enough not to matter.
You wash bulky items regularly. Comforters, sleeping bags, mattress protectors. No centre column means the item can actually tumble instead of wrapping around a plastic post. This is the impeller's clearest practical win.
You care about fabric life. Less mechanical action means less pilling and less seam wear. Over a decade of washing knitwear, that is visible.
Water is expensive where you live, or a utility rebate is available. Ten gallons a load at 300 loads a year is 3,000 gallons, and efficiency certification is the gate on most rebate programmes.
Noise matters. Impeller machines are generally quieter, and they transmit less vibration into a suspended floor.
The compromise most people should consider
A front-loader is the third option and it sidesteps most of this argument. It uses less water than either top-loader type, it is gentler than an agitator, it holds bulky items like an impeller, and it spins at 1,200 to 1,400 RPM against 700 to 900 — which cuts dryer time substantially.
Its drawbacks are real: it costs more, cycles run long, the door gasket needs wiping or it develops odour, and loading it means bending. But if the deciding factor is "which technology is best" rather than "which top-loader is best", a front-loader wins on most axes.
The reason it is not the automatic answer is ergonomics and price. A lot of people simply do not want to bend to load a machine, and that is a legitimate preference rather than a failure of research.
Detergent is not interchangeable between them
A detail that causes a surprising number of "my new washer does not clean" complaints.
Impeller and front-load machines are high-efficiency designs and require HE detergent, which is formulated to produce very little foam. Ordinary detergent in a low-water machine generates a suds blanket that cushions the load, prevents the mechanical action from reaching the fabric, and leaves residue that will not rinse out in the water available.
Agitator machines using a full fill tolerate either, and benefit from the greater dilution.
The practical rules:
- Use HE detergent in any low-water machine, and use the dose on the cap rather than the one that feels right. Over-dosing is the single most common cause of residue and odour complaints.
- In an agitator machine on a sensed cycle, treat it as a high-efficiency machine and dose accordingly.
- In an agitator machine on a full manual fill, you have the water to support a normal dose.
Too much detergent looks like too little: clothes come out stiff, smell faintly, and never feel properly rinsed. The fix is less soap, not more.

Trades household, farm, or anyone washing mud: agitator, with a manual fill override. The performance difference is real and it shows up every week.

Delicate-heavy wardrobe, or lots of bulky bedding: impeller, or better still a front-loader.
Small apartment, laundry next to a bedroom: impeller or front-loader. Agitator machines are the loudest of the three and transmit the most vibration.
Questions people actually ask
Do impeller washers clean as well as agitators?
For ordinary laundry — shirts, bedding, towels, everyday wear — yes, and the difference is negligible. For heavily soiled items with ground-in dirt, no. An impeller relies more on detergent chemistry and time; an agitator adds mechanical force, and mechanical force is what dislodges soil bonded to fibre.
Which washer type lasts longer?
Neither has a decisive advantage, and the failure modes differ. Agitator machines have a mechanical transmission that can wear but is generally serviceable. Impeller machines are simpler mechanically but more dependent on electronics and sensors, and a failed control board is often uneconomic to replace. Build quality within a brand matters more than the wash system.
Are impeller washers gentler on clothes?
Yes, measurably. There is no column of moving plastic rubbing against fabric, and the reduced mechanical action means less pilling and less wear at seams over years. If your wardrobe is mostly knitwear or delicate fabrics, that is a real advantage.
Why do impeller washers take so long?
Because they substitute time for water and mechanical action. A low-water wash needs a longer soak and tumble to achieve the same soil removal. A normal cycle on an impeller machine commonly runs 60 to 90 minutes against 40 to 50 on an agitator.
Can you put a comforter in an agitator washer?
Yes, but as a single item and loaded around the agitator rather than draped over it. The centre column reduces usable volume for bulky items, which is the one area where impeller machines have a clear practical edge.
Do agitator washers still get made?
Fewer every year. Agitator top-loaders cannot meet current efficiency certification thresholds, so most manufacturers have moved the category to impellers. A handful of models remain, mostly from GE and Whirlpool, and they tend to be the value-oriented trims rather than the flagships.
