Homyprovement is a one-editor publication covering home improvement products that are expensive, arrive on a pallet, and are genuinely painful to return.

That last criterion is the whole editorial premise. Nobody needs a 2,000-word review of a $30 kettle — if it is wrong you send it back. A $2,500 gazebo that needs three people and a weekend to assemble, bolted to a slab you had to pour, is a different kind of decision, and it is one where research pays for itself.

Why these seven categories#

Outdoor structures, laundry appliances, water heating, lawn equipment, concrete tools, electric utility vehicles and adjustable beds share a shape.

They are high-consideration purchases where people research for weeks. They have specification sheets that reward reading — dimensions, load ratings, electrical requirements, warranty splits — and where those specifications frequently contradict the marketing that surrounds them. And they have installation requirements that change the real cost, often substantially, in ways the price tag does not communicate.

They are also, mostly, categories where the existing coverage is poor. A great deal of what ranks for these searches is the manufacturer's own bullet points reworded, with a star rating attached and no indication that anyone opened a manual.

What we do differently#

We read the documents.

The installation manual is published as a PDF before you buy and almost nobody opens it. It contains the slope limit, the clearance with the lid open, the torque specification, the breaker requirement. Those numbers decide whether a product fits your house, and they are more useful than any amount of prose about build quality.

The warranty document is the other one. A "five-year warranty" that covers roof panels for five years and the aluminium frame for one is a materially different offer from a five-year warranty on the whole structure. We check which component carries which term, every time, and it has changed our conclusion more than once.

The result is reviews that lead with numbers and are frequently less flattering than the alternative. One of our highest-scoring products carries a paragraph explaining why its published slope limit rules it out for a lot of buyers. One review recommends renting instead of buying for most readers. That is what the work produces when you do it honestly.

What we are not#

We are not a testing lab. We do not receive review units, we do not have a dynamometer, and we do not write "we ran it for six months" because we did not. This is stated on every review and explained in full on how we review.

That constraint is genuine and it has an upside: we have no relationships with the manufacturers we cover, no embargo agreements, and nothing to lose by being blunt.

We are not comprehensive. Eight products in depth, with the comparisons and background guides people search for while deciding. When a category has nothing more worth saying, we stop writing about it rather than padding it out.

We are not neutral about being funded. Affiliate commissions pay for this, it is disclosed above the first link on every page, and the mechanics are set out on how we are funded.

Who runs it#

One editor, named on every article, with a page setting out background and areas of expertise. There is no anonymous "expert team", no stock-photo bylines and no AI-generated personas. If something on this site is wrong, there is exactly one person to hold responsible for it.

Content here is editor-directed and fact-checked, and where AI assistance is used in the production process it is disclosed plainly on our editorial policy rather than hidden.

We read everything. We cannot promise to reply to everything, but a correction always gets a reply.
