Almost every manufacturer has moved this price bracket to impeller machines. They use less water, they qualify for efficiency certifications, they hold more, and they let the marketing department say "high efficiency" on the box.

GE kept building this one. Dual-action agitator, manual water level control, stainless basket, no connectivity, assembled in Kentucky. In 2026 that is a slightly contrarian product, and for a certain kind of household it is exactly right.

What actually fits in 4.5 cubic feet

Capacity numbers in this category are misleading because an agitator occupies the middle of the drum. A 4.5 cu ft impeller machine has a flat floor and 4.5 cubic feet of usable space. A 4.5 cu ft agitator machine has a column in the way.

The technique with a centre agitator matters more than with an impeller. Bulky items go around the agitator, distributed evenly, not draped over the top. An item balled on top of the agitator does not circulate, does not get clean, and throws the machine out of balance during spin.

The cabinet is 27 inches wide, 27 deep and 44 tall. Unremarkable, and it slots into any standard laundry alcove.

With the lid open, the depth is 54 inches.

That is the number that catches people, and it catches them after delivery. A wall cabinet mounted at a normal height above a washer will be struck by the lid. A low shelf will be struck by the lid. A sloping basement ceiling will be struck by the lid.

Measure the vertical space above the machine as well as the floor space in front of it, and check that the lid has 54 inches of clear arc. It takes two minutes and it is the single most common regret with any top-loading washer.

Two other install details worth having in advance: allow 4 inches at the rear for hoses without kinking them, and 1 inch at the sides. Drain height must be between 30 and 96 inches from the floor — below 30 and the machine siphons, which shows up as a cycle that never finishes filling.

Deep Fill, and why this machine is not ENERGY STAR

Most current top-loaders sense the load and set their own water level. It is efficient and it is the reason a lot of people find modern washers frustrating: a load of muddy work trousers gets the same modest splash of water as a load of shirts, and comes out still muddy.

Deep Fill overrides that. Press it and the machine fills to a level you would recognise from a twenty-year-old washer — roughly 27 gallons on a full load against about 14 to 17 on a sensed cycle.

That is the trade, stated plainly. You are choosing to use about 10 extra gallons per load to get more mechanical cleaning action. Over 300 loads a year, using Deep Fill every time costs roughly 3,000 extra gallons — around $15 to $30 of water and sewer in most municipalities, plus the energy to heat whatever proportion is hot.

It is also why the machine is not, and cannot be, ENERGY STAR certified. Agitator top-loaders in this class do not meet the water factor thresholds. If your utility offers a rebate for a certified washer, this machine is excluded from it, and that rebate is frequently $50 to $150.

Agitator versus impeller, on this machine specifically

The dual-action agitator has two parts: a lower barrel that rotates the load, and an upper auger that pushes clothes down from the top. Together they produce a rolling action that keeps the load turning over.

Where this beats an impeller:

  • Ground-in dirt. Mechanical agitation is what removes soil that detergent alone will not lift. Trades clothing, garden clothes, kids' sports kit.
  • Shorter cycles. More water and more agitation means less time. A normal cycle here runs 40 to 50 minutes against 60 to 90 on many high-efficiency machines.
  • Predictable behaviour. It fills, it agitates, it spins. There is no sensing algorithm deciding things on your behalf.

Where an impeller wins:

  • Delicates and knitwear. An agitator is harder on fabric, and over years that shows as pilling and wear at the seams.
  • Bulky items. No centre column means a comforter can actually tumble.
  • Water and energy. Consistently and by a clear margin.

The Samsung's 1,200 RPM spin is worth noting because it does not show up in a washer comparison — it shows up in your dryer bill. Clothes leaving a front-loader at 1,200 RPM carry substantially less water than clothes leaving this machine at 700, and the dryer makes up the difference in energy. Over a year that is a real cost that partly offsets this machine's lower purchase price.

Who should not buy this

  • Anyone chasing a utility rebate. It is not certified and it will not qualify. Buy an impeller or front-load machine instead.
  • Households with a wall cabinet above the washer. 54 inches of open-lid depth. Measure first.
  • Apartments with the laundry beside a bedroom. 60 dB during wash, plus floor-transmitted vibration on a suspended floor.
  • Anyone washing mostly delicate fabrics. An agitator is harder on knitwear over years than an impeller is.
  • People who want a machine that texts them. There is no app and there never will be. For most people that is a feature; if it is not, this is not your machine.

What works

  • A real dual-action agitator. For mud, grease and ground-in dirt it outperforms an impeller, and it is increasingly hard to buy one at all.
  • Deep Fill returns manual water control. Most 2026 top-loaders decide the water level for you and offer no override. This one has a button.
  • Stainless steel basket at a price point where painted or porcelain baskets are still common. It will not chip, and it will not snag.
  • Assembled in Louisville, Kentucky, which matters for parts availability and service more than it does for sentiment.
  • No Wi-Fi, no app, no account. The control panel is the entire interface, and it will work identically in fifteen years.

GE has kept building an agitator top-loader with manual water control at a price where everyone else has moved on, and for households that actually get their clothes dirty that is a genuinely better machine.

What holds it back is not the design philosophy — it is the ordinary stuff. A one-year warranty is the industry floor. 700 RPM spin means longer dryer cycles. And the efficiency numbers are what they are; if water costs a lot where you live, or a rebate is on the table, that arithmetic goes the other way.

Is the GE GTW485 loud?

It is rated at 60 dB during the wash cycle, which is roughly conversation volume — noticeable in an adjoining room, not disruptive. The spin cycle is louder and not covered by that figure. The bigger factor is the floor: agitator machines transmit vibration, and on a suspended timber floor the machine will be considerably more present than the decibel number suggests. Levelling all four legs properly makes more difference than anything else.

Can the GE GTW485 wash a king-size comforter?

A standard king comforter, yes. An oversized or heavily filled one, marginally. The 4.5 cu ft drum with a centre agitator has less usable volume than the same number in an impeller machine, because the agitator column occupies the middle. Use Deep Fill, load the comforter around the agitator rather than on top of it, and expect it to be a single-item load.

Does the GE GTW485 have a lint filter?

Not a user-serviceable one in the way older machines did. It uses a self-cleaning pump filter, so there is nothing to remove and rinse. That is convenient until something small gets past it — check pockets, because a coin that reaches the pump is a service call rather than a two-minute fix.

How much water does the GTW485 use?

Roughly 27 gallons for a full Deep Fill load, and about 14 to 17 gallons on a sensed normal cycle where the machine sets its own level.
