Adjustable bed weight limits: why the number is lower than it looks
Every manufacturer publishes this correctly and none of them make it obvious. The subtraction is the whole point.
The arithmetic
A published capacity is total load, including the mattress. A 14-inch hybrid twin XL weighs 100–120 lb, and latex can exceed 130. So a base rated 375 lb per side actually allows 245–275 lb of sleeper. Exceeding it does not collapse the bed — it shortens motor life and voids the warranty.

Every adjustable base publishes a weight rating and every manufacturer means the same thing by it: total load on the deck. What confuses buyers is that "total load" includes the thing you put on the deck first.
The subtraction

The bottom-left cell and the top-right cell are the same base rating and differ by 160 lb of sleeper allowance, entirely because of what mattress is on it.

What the rating is actually protecting
Not the frame. Steel frames on these bases are substantially overbuilt and are not the limiting component.
The lift motors are. An adjustable base uses linear actuators — a motor driving a screw or a scissor mechanism — and they are sized against a design load with a service life in cycles. Run one at 60% of its rated load and it lasts a long time. Run it at 100% every night and the duty cycle that was designed for eight years becomes three.
The failure is gradual and unglamorous: the motor becomes noisier, then slower, then stalls partway through a lift, then does not move. There is no dramatic moment, which is why exceeding the rating rarely feels like it is causing harm at the time.
Exceeding the limit also voids the warranty, which matters most on a base with a short term to begin with. When the limit is actually a problem
Two adults on a non-split base. A standard king base rated 650 lb total with a 220 lb mattress leaves 430 lb for two people. Two 200 lb adults are at 400 lb, which is inside the rating but not comfortably.
Anyone above about 280 lb on a standard split king. With a 14-inch hybrid on a 375 lb per-side base, that is at the limit before anything else is on the bed.
Households where the bed carries more than the sleepers. Children, a large dog, a laptop and a dinner tray. Transient loads are less damaging than sustained ones, but they are real.
Latex mattresses on any base near its rating. The heaviest common mattress type, and it is a permanent load the actuator lifts on every cycle.
Heavy-duty bases
They exist and they are the correct answer if you are genuinely near a standard base's limit.
What distinguishes them: reinforced frame members, larger-capacity actuators, sometimes two motors per articulation point rather than one, and ratings from 1,000 lb upward. Expect to pay 30 to 60% more than a comparable standard base.
The reason to spend it is straightforward. Motors are the wear item in this product category, and a motor running at half its rated load lasts a great deal longer than one running at capacity. Buying headroom is buying years.
Extending the life of what you have
Four things, all free.
Adjust the bed unloaded when convenient. Raising the head before you get in, rather than after, halves the load on that actuation. It sounds trivial and over thousands of cycles it is not.
Avoid full-travel cycling. Running to the mechanical limits repeatedly is harder on the actuator than moving between intermediate positions. If your comfortable reading position is 40 degrees, use 40 rather than going to 70 and coming back.
Keep the vents clear. Motor housings vent, usually rearward. Eighteen inches of clearance behind the base is the standard recommendation, and blocking it against a wall runs the motors hotter than they were designed for.
Check the frame bolts annually. Thermal cycling and vibration back fasteners off. A loose frame puts uneven load into the actuator mounts. Torque to the manufacturer's figure — 35 N·m on many bases — and do not exceed it, because stripping a frame bolt on an articulating base is a considerably larger problem than a loose one.

How much weight can an adjustable bed hold?
Most residential bases are rated between 650 and 850 lb total. On a split king that is split per side, commonly 325 to 425 lb each. The critical detail is that the figure includes the mattress, so the allowance for the person is 100 to 130 lb lower than the published number.
Does the mattress count toward the weight limit?
Yes, always. Load ratings are total load on the deck, and the mattress is sitting on the deck. Manufacturers state this in the manual and rarely on the product page, which is why so many buyers work from the wrong number.
What happens if you exceed an adjustable bed's weight limit?
