Which mattresses work on an adjustable bed — and which will not bend
The mattress either bends or it does not, and the thing that decides it is what runs around the edge.
Quick answer
Works: memory foam, latex, and most pocketed-coil hybrids. Does not work: traditional innerspring mattresses with a continuous or rigid perimeter frame, and anything with a bonded border rod. Check: maximum thickness for the retainer bar (usually 12–14 in), and whether the mattress weight leaves enough of the base's per-side capacity for the sleeper.

Adjustable bases articulate. Mattresses either come with them or resist, and what decides it is almost entirely the construction of the perimeter.
What works, and why
Memory foam. Flexes readily in any direction and has no structural elements to resist. The most compatible construction there is.
Latex. Same reasoning, and generally more durable through repeated flexing than polyurethane foam because latex has better fatigue resistance.
Pocketed-coil hybrids. Each coil sits in its own fabric pocket and moves independently of its neighbours, so the coil layer bends without fighting itself. The great majority of mattresses sold today are this construction and the great majority are compatible.
What does not work
Traditional innerspring mattresses. Bonnell, offset and continuous-coil constructions connect the springs into a single unit — usually with helical wires running across the mattress. That unit is designed as a rigid plane. It does not bend, and asking it to bend permanently deforms the wire.
Anything with a rigid perimeter rail. Many mattresses have a border rod: a heavy-gauge wire running around the entire edge to support the sides and stop the mattress rolling. It is exactly the wrong component on an articulating base, because it is a continuous stiff member spanning every fold point.
Very thick mattresses, generally over 14 inches. Two problems compound: the mattress resists bending simply through its own depth, and it may not fit under the retainer bar at the foot of the base.
Mattresses on a box spring. Not a mattress problem, but the most common setup error. The base is the foundation. A box spring between the two prevents articulation entirely.
Testing what you already own
Three checks, none of which require taking anything apart.
Feel the perimeter. Run your hand around the edge, pressing in every foot or so. A continuous stiff wire or rail that resists uniformly all the way round means a border rod, and the mattress will not articulate. Foam encasement that gives in sections is fine.
Check the label and the product page. Anything made in the last decade that is compatible usually says so. Absence of the statement is weak evidence, but presence of it is decisive.
Fold test the corner. Lift one corner of the mattress about a foot off the floor and watch what happens two feet along the edge. A compatible mattress starts curving smoothly. A rigid one lifts as a plane, hinging at the far end.
If all three are ambiguous, the mattress is probably an older innerspring and probably not compatible.
The specification checks before buying
Maximum thickness. Every base publishes one, usually 12 to 14 inches, set by the retainer bar height. Exceed it and the mattress rides over the bar and slides off the foot when the base articulates.
Weight allowance. This is the check almost nobody makes. Base capacities include the mattress. A base rated 375 lb per side with a 110 lb mattress on it has 265 lb left for the sleeper. Minimum thickness. Below about 8 inches you begin to feel the base's articulation joints through the mattress, particularly at the knee break. Ten inches is a comfortable floor.
Split king means two mattresses. Two twin XL mattresses, not one king cut in half. If you are buying separately, buy a matched pair — mattresses from different production runs settle differently and the split becomes visible.
The bedding problem
Worth stating because it is a recurring cost rather than a one-off.
On a split king, the two halves articulate independently. A standard king fitted sheet spans both and binds the moment one side raises — it pulls the other side's corners loose and, over time, tears at the elastic.
You need either two twin XL fitted sheets, or a purpose-made split-king set with a divided fitted section. Budget $60 to $150 for a decent set, and expect to own two so one can be in the wash.
Top sheets and duvets are unaffected and can stay king-sized.
If you are replacing the mattress anyway
Buy for the base as well as for yourself. Three things to prioritise:
Pocketed coils or all-foam. Both articulate cleanly. Avoid connected-coil constructions entirely.
Ten to twelve inches. Thick enough for comfort, thin enough to bend easily and stay under the retainer bar. Fourteen works on most bases but is the upper end.
Check the weight against the base's per-side rating before ordering, especially with latex.

Questions people actually ask
Can you use any mattress on an adjustable bed?
No. Memory foam, latex and most modern pocketed-coil hybrids flex without complaint. Traditional innerspring mattresses built on a connected coil unit with a rigid perimeter wire will not bend, and forcing them either prevents articulation or permanently damages the mattress. If the mattress does not say it is adjustable-base compatible, assume it is not.
How do I know if my mattress will bend?
Feel around the edge. If there is a stiff continuous wire or a rigid foam rail running the full perimeter, it will resist bending. If the edge is foam-encased in sections, or there is no rail at all, it will articulate. The other test is age — mattresses made in the last decade are far more likely to be compatible than older ones.
Is a hybrid mattress OK on an adjustable base?
Usually yes, provided the coils are individually pocketed rather than connected in a unit. Pocketed coils move independently and let the mattress flex. Bonnell, offset and continuous coil constructions do not. Check the product description for 'pocketed' or 'individually wrapped'.
What thickness mattress for an adjustable bed?
Between 10 and 14 inches suits most bases. Thinner than 8 inches and you feel the articulation joints through it; thicker than 14 and the mattress resists bending, and it may not fit under the retainer bar. Check the base's stated maximum — this is a specification manufacturers publish and buyers rarely read.
Does an adjustable base ruin a mattress faster?
Repeated flexing does accelerate wear at the fold points, but on a mattress designed for it the effect is modest — perhaps a year or two off a ten-year life. On a mattress not designed for it, the damage is immediate rather than gradual. Rotating the mattress head to foot every three months evens the wear where the design allows.
Do I need a special foundation or box spring?
No, and you must not use one. The adjustable base is the foundation. Putting a box spring between the base and the mattress prevents the articulation entirely, and it is one of the more common setup mistakes with a first adjustable bed.
