Zero-turn mowers on hills: what the 10-degree limit really means
The number is in every manual and it is lower than the lawn looks. Here is the mechanism behind it, and why a slope that felt fine on a tractor is not fine on this machine.
The short answer
Most residential zero-turns are rated to 10 degrees, which is a 21-inch rise over 10 feet or roughly an 18% grade. Above that, the uphill rear wheel unloads on a side slope and loses traction — and because a zero-turn steers by wheel speed, you lose steering at the same instant you lose drive. Always mow up and down a slope, never across it, and never near a drop-off.

Ten degrees is less than it sounds.
What 10 degrees looks like
A 10-degree slope is a 21-inch rise over 10 feet, or about an 18% grade.
For comparison: a wheelchair ramp at the maximum permitted gradient is under 5 degrees. A steep residential driveway is 12 to 15. The drainage berm alongside a road is frequently 15 to 20. That gentle-looking rise at the back of a suburban lawn is often 12.
Slopes read shallower by eye than they measure, consistently and by a wide margin, because we have no calibrated reference for gradient. The only reliable method is to measure.
How to measure it properly: put a straight 10-foot board on the slope running downhill. Level it with a spirit level, holding the downhill end up. Measure the vertical gap from the board's downhill end to the ground. That gap in inches, divided by 21, gives you your slope in units of 10 degrees. A 21-inch gap is 10 degrees; a 32-inch gap is about 15.

Why zero-turns fail on slopes differently
The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains why the limit is lower than for a tractor and why exceeding it is not gradual.
A zero-turn has two driven rear wheels and two castering front wheels. There is no steered axle. Direction is set entirely by the speed difference between the two rear wheels — drive the left faster than the right and the machine turns right.
On a side slope, weight transfers downhill. The uphill rear wheel carries less load, and a wheel carrying less load has less available traction. At some grade, that wheel begins to slip.
And that is the moment you lose steering, because the wheel you would use to correct is the wheel with no grip. The lap bar still moves. The transaxle still responds. The tyre just turns without pushing anything. The machine starts travelling sideways down the slope, and the controls have nothing to work with.
On a lawn tractor, the same traction loss means you stop climbing. It does not mean you stop steering, because a steered front axle points the machine mechanically. That is the whole difference, and it is why zero-turn against lawn tractor lands where it does for hilly lots.
Technique that genuinely helps
If you have slopes within the rated limit, how you mow them matters.
Mow up and down, never across. This is the single most important rule and it is the reverse of walk-behind advice. Going straight up and down keeps both drive wheels equally loaded and traction symmetrical. Going across puts one wheel light.
Go downhill slower than you think. On descent, momentum is carrying the machine and the transaxles are effectively braking. Half speed is not excessive.
Turn at the bottom, on flat ground. Turning on a slope loads the wheels unevenly and is where a lot of slides start. Run out onto level ground, turn there, and go back up.
Keep clear of drop-offs by at least one machine width. Ponds, retaining walls, ditches, roads. A slide on open ground is embarrassing; a slide toward water is how people drown in mowers, and it happens more often than the statistics suggest anyone would expect.
Never mow a wet slope. Damp grass halves available traction, and traction is the entire margin you are working with.
Keep the deck low. A lower deck means a lower centre of mass. Marginal, but free.
Both hands on the bars, always. Recovery from a slip requires immediate symmetric input and you cannot give it one-handed.
What to do with ground you cannot mow
If part of your lot exceeds the rating, you have four options and only one of them is a mower purchase.
Use a walk-behind for that section. A self-propelled walk-behind is rated considerably higher, and mowing across a slope on foot is both standard practice and safe. For a bank of a few hundred square feet this is twenty minutes.
Buy a lawn tractor instead if the slope is a large proportion of the lot. Rated to 15 degrees typically, and it will handle the flat ground perfectly well too.
Use a string trimmer on a bank. Slow, and the correct tool above about 20 degrees.
Stop mowing it. This is the answer people dislike and it is frequently the right one. A steep bank planted with ornamental grasses, juniper, creeping phlox or a native mix looks better than mown turf, prevents erosion, needs cutting back once a year, and removes the hazard entirely. On a slope over 20 degrees this is what we would do.
Before you buy
Measure the steepest part of your lot with a board and a level. Write the number down. Then compare it against the published limit for any machine you are considering — it is in the operator's manual, which every manufacturer publishes as a PDF before you buy.

How steep can a zero-turn mower go?
Ten degrees is the figure most residential manufacturers publish, including Ariens for the Edge. Commercial machines with wider stances and heavier frames sometimes go to 15 or 20 degrees, and articulated or tracked mowers go higher still. The residential number is not conservative marketing — it reflects a real change in behaviour above that grade.
Why are zero-turns worse on hills than lawn tractors?
Because steering and drive are the same system. A zero-turn sets direction by the speed difference between two driven rear wheels. On a side slope the uphill wheel carries less weight, loses traction first, and stops contributing — so you lose forward drive and directional control simultaneously. A tractor's steered front axle keeps pointing the machine regardless of what the rear wheels are doing.
Should you mow up and down or across a slope?
Up and down, always, on a zero-turn. Both drive wheels stay equally loaded, traction is symmetrical, and steering behaves normally. Mowing across a slope is what puts one wheel light and produces the sideways slide. This is the opposite of the advice for a walk-behind, where mowing across is safer.

What happens if you exceed the slope limit?
Usually a slide rather than a rollover. The uphill wheel spins, the machine begins to travel sideways down the slope, and lap-bar input has no effect because the wheel you are asking to speed up has no grip. It is recoverable on open ground and it is not recoverable next to a pond, a retaining wall or a road.
Do stripe kits or weights help on slopes?
Wheel weights and ballast improve traction somewhat by loading the drive wheels, and some manufacturers offer them. They do not change the published slope rating and they do not change the failure mechanism — a weighted machine that starts sliding is a heavier machine sliding. Treat them as a marginal aid on damp flat ground, not a slope solution.
What should I use on a steep lawn?
A lawn tractor rated to 15 degrees for moderate slopes, or a walk-behind for anything steeper. Above about 20 degrees you are into dedicated slope equipment — remote-controlled slope mowers or a string trimmer on a bank. The correct answer for a genuinely steep bank is often to stop mowing it and plant it instead.
