Louvered pergola vs fixed roof: what the mechanism costs and what it buys
Three rows of rotating blades is a genuinely useful capability and a genuinely real maintenance liability. Which matters more depends on your latitude.

Fixed roof if you want cover, louvered if you want control. A fixed aluminium roof costs roughly $2,000 less on a 390 sq ft structure, carries far more snow, and has nothing to wear out. Louvers earn their money in exactly one situation: a patio where you want shade in July and direct sun in January. If that is not your problem, you are buying a mechanism you will not use.

Two rows do the heavy lifting. Snow rating is a factor of three, and warranty term is a factor of five to ten. Those are not stylistic differences.
What louvers genuinely buy you
Seasonal sun control. This is the real argument and it is a good one. In a climate with a proper winter, a permanent roof over a south-facing patio blocks the low January sun you actually want. Louvers let you open the roof in winter and close it in July, and on a patio adjoining living space that changes how much light gets into the house too.
Evening flexibility. Angling the blades against a low western sun is something a fixed roof cannot do at all. On a west-facing patio this is the difference between a space that is pleasant at 6 pm and one that is not.
Ventilation on hot days. Blades at 45° let hot air rise out rather than sit under a sealed roof. A fixed roof needs a separate vent detail to manage that, and most kits do not have one.
Rain you can watch. A minor thing that people report enjoying more than they expected — closing the roof over a storm and staying dry underneath it while still hearing it.
What the fixed roof buys you
Snow capacity, by a factor of three or more. This is where the decision is usually made and it is not close. Louvered systems at this price point are rated between 6 and 10 psf. Wet snow runs about 20 lb per cubic foot, so a 6 psf rating is roughly four inches of it. Fixed aluminium covers from regional fabricators are engineered against local ground snow loads because they have to pass a plans examiner.
Nothing to wear out. Every reported failure mode on a louvered pergola involves the pivots. Blades binding, rows drifting out of alignment, cranks stiffening. Bearings carrying sustained wind load in the closed position, cycled a few hundred times a season, in weather. A fixed roof has a gutter to clear and that is the maintenance schedule.
Warranty that reflects the price. Two years on a $5,400 structure against ten to twenty on a fixed cover is the starkest number in the comparison. It is also the most revealing — manufacturers warrant what they expect to survive.
Permit documentation. Fixed patio covers from established fabricators generally come with stamped drawings. Direct-to-consumer louvered kits do not, and that is where DIY permit applications for this product stall. If your jurisdiction requires a plans review, that is not a problem you can solve after the pallet arrives.
The situation where each one is obviously right
Buy louvered if: you are in USDA zone 7 or warmer, your patio faces south or west, the seasonal light change matters to you, and you accept that the roof is a fair-weather roof with a winter procedure.
Buy fixed if: you get real snow, you want to install it once and forget it, you need a permit with drawings, or the patio faces north where the seasonal sun argument mostly evaporates.

What each one does to the room behind it
A patio structure changes the light inside the house, and this is the effect most people notice only after installation.
A fixed roof over a south-facing patio blocks direct sun year round, which is the point in summer and a real loss in winter. The room behind loses low-angle January light, which is the light that makes a room feel warm. On a north-facing patio the effect is negligible because there was no direct sun to lose.
Louvers are the answer to exactly this problem, and it is arguably a better argument for them than the patio comfort one. Open in winter, closed in summer, and the room behind keeps its seasonal light.
If your patio adjoins a main living room and faces south or west, walk into that room at midday in December before deciding. That is the moment when a permanent roof either does or does not matter to you, and it is much easier to evaluate before the structure exists.
Wind behaviour, which differs more than the ratings suggest
Both structures publish wind ratings and they behave quite differently in practice.
A fixed roof is a continuous surface. Wind generates uplift across the whole area, the load goes into the posts and the anchors, and the failure mode — if it comes — is at the connection to the ground.
Louvers open let air pass through almost entirely. Wind load in that configuration is a fraction of the closed figure, which is why leaving louvers open in a storm is genuinely good practice rather than superstition.
Louvers closed approximate a fixed roof, with one difference: the load path runs through the pivot hardware rather than through a continuous panel. That is more connections, each carrying load, each a potential wear point.
The practical rule: in any wind event, open the louvers. It takes thirty seconds, it reduces the load on the structure by a large factor, and it is the one maintenance behaviour that most affects how long the mechanism lasts.
The maintenance nobody mentions
If you do go louvered, two jobs keep the mechanism alive, and both take about twenty minutes a year.
Lubricate the pivots at the end of each season with a dry PTFE spray rather than a wet oil. Wet lubricants collect dust and pollen and turn into grinding paste, which is exactly the wrong outcome on a bearing that is already carrying load.
Check blade alignment by closing each row fully and sighting down it. A blade that no longer sits flush against its neighbour is the early warning for a pivot going out of true, and it is a cheap fix at that stage.

Are louvered pergolas worth the extra cost?
In a climate with a real seasonal swing, often yes — being able to block a July sun and admit a January one is a comfort difference you feel most days of the year. In a consistently hot climate, a fixed roof does the job for less money and has nothing to service. The mechanism is worth paying for when you will actually change its position, and most people who want shade want it permanently.
What goes wrong with louvered pergolas?
Pivot hardware, essentially always. Each blade rotates on bearings that carry wind load in the closed position and cycle every time you adjust the roof. How much snow can a louvered pergola hold?

Do louvered pergolas leak when closed?
A well-made one sheds rain into an integrated gutter and drains through the posts, so it is functionally waterproof in normal rain. It is not a sealed roof — in wind-driven rain some spray comes through the blade joints, and that is inherent to the design rather than a defect.
Manual or motorised louvers?
Manual if you are buying at the direct-to-consumer price point, because a cheap motor on a roof is a future repair. Motorised makes sense at the premium end where the actuators, controller and rain sensor are engineered as a system and warranted for a decade.
