Kandi Cowboy electric UTV review: 11.52 kWh, 2,500 lb towing, and an eight-hour charge

Most electric UTVs are golf carts with a bed. This one tows 2,500 pounds and carries a pack twice the size of its rivals — then charges at the speed of a kettle.

Most electric utility vehicles are golf carts that have grown a bed. The Kandi Cowboy is not one of them. The pack is small, the towing rating is nominal, and the intended use is moving two people and a cooler around a resort.

This is not that. Two 5,000-watt motors, all-wheel drive, an 11.52 kWh pack, 2,500 pounds of towing and a hydraulic dump bed with a wireless remote. Those are work specifications, and they cost $15,999.

The pack sits under the bed, which is why a vehicle towing 2,500 lb carries only 441 in the tray. Charging is fixed at 1.44 kW from a household outlet — eight hours from empty, and no way to shorten it.

Range: the claim and the reality

Kandi publishes 60 miles of mixed use. From an 11.52 kWh pack, that implies 192 watt-hours per mile, which is a defensible figure for a light vehicle driven gently on level ground.

It is not what you will see doing actual work.

The 60-mile number is not dishonest, it is just measured the way every manufacturer measures range. Plan your property around 35 to 40 miles and the vehicle will never surprise you.

Three things consume range faster than the test conditions.

Speed. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of velocity, and a UTV is a brick. Sustained 40 mph roughly doubles consumption against a 15 mph trail cruise.

Load and towing. A loaded bed and a trailer are additional mass to accelerate and additional rolling resistance to overcome. A 40% range reduction with a loaded trailer is a reasonable planning assumption.

Cold. Lithium cells lose usable capacity below freezing, and the pack spends energy warming itself before it will accept or deliver full current. Twenty to thirty percent range loss in genuine cold is normal, and it is covered in electric UTVs in the cold.

Plan your property around 35 to 45 miles and the vehicle will never disappoint you. Plan around 60 and it will, in February, a mile from the barn.

The charging limit is the real constraint

Eight hours, from a 120 V outlet, drawing about 1.44 kW. There is no DC fast charging and no 240 V charging option.

For most owners this is a non-issue. The vehicle works during the day, plugs in at night, and is full by morning. A property under about 40 miles a day never encounters the limit.

Where it bites is any scenario needing a mid-day turnaround. If you empty the pack by lunchtime, the afternoon is not happening. There is no equivalent of walking to the shed with a jerrycan.

A partial charge helps a little — an hour on the charger returns roughly five to seven miles of real range — but you cannot compress eight hours of energy into a lunch break at 1.44 kW. That is arithmetic, not a software limitation.

Running cost is the compensation. A full charge is 11.52 kWh, which at $0.17 per kWh is $1.96 for 35 to 45 miles — about 4 to 5 cents a mile. Street legality has no factory answer

The Cowboy does 40 mph. Federal low-speed vehicle rules under FMVSS 500 apply to vehicles with a top speed between 20 and 25 mph. Above 25, a vehicle is not an LSV and cannot be registered as one.

So the Cowboy cannot be plated as an LSV anywhere, and whether it can be used on a public road at all comes down to your state's UTV or off-highway vehicle rules. Those vary from "yes, with a flag and a slow-moving-vehicle triangle" to "no, under any circumstances", with a large middle ground of county-by-county rules on specific road classes.

Some owners have the speed limiter reduced to 25 mph by a dealer to pursue LSV registration. That is a real path in some states, and it comes with the obvious cost — you have bought a 40 mph vehicle and made it a 25 mph one. It also does not automatically satisfy the equipment requirements: LSVs need DOT-approved lighting, mirrors, a windshield, seat belts and a VIN that identifies the vehicle as an LSV.

What the electric drivetrain genuinely buys

Instant torque. Electric motors make maximum torque from zero rpm. Pulling a loaded trailer up a wet grade from a standing start is where this is obvious, and it is where small petrol engines struggle most.

Silence. Underrated until you have it. Working near livestock, moving around a property at 6 am without waking anyone, hunting, or simply having a conversation while driving. This is the feature owners mention first.

No maintenance. No oil changes, no fuel filters, no air filters, no spark plugs, no carburettor to gum up over a winter. For a vehicle that sits for six weeks and then has to start, this is a substantial practical advantage — a stale-fuel no-start on a gas UTV is the single most common seasonal complaint in the category.

No fuel storage. No cans, no stabiliser, no trips to the station.

What it does not buy is refuelling flexibility, and that is the whole trade. electric against gas UTVs covers it properly.

The pack size is the headline and it is genuine — nearly double the Polaris. Note the bed capacity, though: 441 lb against the Ranger's 1,000. If your work is hauling gravel rather than towing, that row matters more than the battery.

The Polaris row that does not appear in the table is service. Polaris has a dealer within reach of most rural properties in the United States. Kandi does not. On a $16,000 vehicle that will need parts at some point, that gap is worth real money and it is the strongest argument against the Cowboy despite it winning most specification comparisons.

The touchscreen, and what it does and does not do

A 10-inch touchscreen on a work vehicle is an unusual choice and it draws a lot of attention in the marketing, so it is worth being specific.

What it genuinely adds: a backup camera with guide lines, which on a vehicle you reverse into barns and up to trailers is useful every day. Regenerative braking level, which is a real setting worth changing between flat and hilly ground. Battery state and consumption data, which is the only way to learn what your property actually costs in watt-hours per mile.

What is less useful than it sounds: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on a vehicle without doors, in an environment with mud on your hands. Bluetooth audio in a vehicle whose best feature is silence.

What to be sceptical of: a large touchscreen is a large piece of consumer electronics in a wet, vibrating, dusty, cold environment. It is a component with a shorter expected life than the vehicle around it, and on a small dealer network the replacement path is untested.

If it fails, the vehicle still drives — the essential controls are physical — but you lose the camera and the regen settings.

Who should not buy this

  • Anyone needing a mid-day turnaround. Eight hours is eight hours.
  • Remote or off-grid properties without reliable mains power at the vehicle's home base.
  • Anyone who needs it road legal and lives in a restrictive state. Confirm with your DMV before ordering, not after.
  • Cold-climate owners storing it unheated. Range losses are real and lithium does not like being charged below freezing.
  • Buyers who need dealer support within an hour's drive. Check where the nearest Kandi service point actually is.
  • Anyone hauling heavy bed loads. 441 lb is modest for the class; the Ranger carries more than twice that.

What works

  • 11.52 kWh of lithium — roughly double the pack in a Polaris Ranger EV, and the reason the range claim is plausible at all.
  • 2,500 lb towing and a 441 lb powered dump bed with a wireless remote. These are work numbers, not brochure numbers.
  • 10,000 W across two motors with AWD and instant torque, which genuinely out-pulls comparable gas machines from a standstill.
  • No oil, no filters, no belts, no carburettor. For a vehicle that sits unused for six weeks at a time, that is worth more than the horsepower.
  • Silent operation — which matters more than it sounds on a property with livestock, or where you are working at 6 am near a neighbour.

What doesn't

  • Charging is 1.44 kW, full stop. No DC fast charge, no 240 V option. Empty to full is eight hours and there is no way to shorten it.
  • Real range is 35 to 45 miles, not 60. Loaded, towing, or below freezing, plan on the lower end.
  • 40 mph exceeds the federal 25 mph LSV ceiling, so it cannot be registered as a low-speed vehicle. Road use depends entirely on your state's UTV rules.
  • Seven marketplace ratings on a $16,000 vehicle. The dealer network is small and the service reputation is largely unwritten.

The verdict

7.6. The vehicle is genuinely good and better specified than its price suggests — the pack, the towing rating and the powered dump bed are all above class norms, and the silence and zero maintenance are real quality-of-life gains on a working property.

What holds it back is not the engineering. It is the 1.44 kW charge ceiling, which makes the vehicle's daily range a hard limit rather than a soft one, and a dealer network thin enough that a parts failure is a genuine unknown. Neither is a reason not to buy it; both are reasons to be honest about what you are taking on.

If your property is under 40 miles a day and the vehicle sleeps somewhere with an outlet, buy it. If either of those is untrue, buy gas.
